From chorale to chant, from jazz to folk, from thick and complex 21st-century harmonies to stark simplicity, "My Heart Is Filled with Joy: Voces Novae Sings the Music of Harry Pickens," documents a collaboration of the highest order between the fertile musical mind of pianist/composer Pickens, the choral mastery of Frank Heller, and the richly textured, dynamic and resonant voices of Voces Novae. The CD features performances of pieces written specifically for Voces Novae during Mr. Pickens' tenure as artist-in-residence from 2007-2009. The selections draw from a rich variety of texts, including the elegant prose of Wendell Berry (When I Rise Up), the enigmatic poetry of ee cummings (I Carry Your Heart), sacred scriptures (Deus Caritas Est), a Native American prayer of welcome (My Heart Is Filled With Joy), as well as original works with text and music by Pickens, who describes the CD as "music to touch the heart, quiet the mind and awaken the spirit."
